Basic Seo

Before I start I want to get us both on the same page with a few terms that will be used throughout the site.

Links and Hypertext.

A link is something you can click on to take you to another part of a document or to a different document. A link does not have to be local as in the case of a PDF where they are used for navigation and in most cases it will be to a document available via the internet and is stored on a computer designed to make such documents available to people from around the world, which is called a server, as it is designed to serve up files to the internet. These types of links are most often found on web pages as that is how people navigate around and between different documents on the internet yet they can be found on local files on your computer as well such as in PDF's.

It is also what they are called links, as they link different things together and make navigation possible without having to know and type in the destination address of each and every thing you wanted to access.

Hypertext is the word or words in a link. This word or Phrase should be an accurate description of the destination file, yet in an concise form if you are using it in your navigation. It makes it a lot harder for your end user or visitor to tell what something is about if it runs over several lines in your navigation as they are use to short one liners.

So if you need or want to use really log descriptions in your links they may be best from within content rather than in your main navigation as a general rule. This allows the end user to easily gauge what type of information they will find should they click on that link and a well defined description in the hypertext not only helps the user find what they are looking for, but will also help the site owner get more people to find that information thanks to the Search Engines.

A Website

A website is primarily a collection of documents or files stored on a server under a single domain name and available to others who have access to those files either freely as is the case of most websites or via registration such as the case of a membership site or an online bank. There are more definitions yet I will be focusing on websites that are available to anyone accessing the internet so I will leave that there. Also a website can be a single document such as an index file.

A Web page

A web page is basically a single document that is written so that it can be read via a web browser.

What you are currently looking at is a .html document called Basic Seo, which can also be accurately called a file. In and of itself it is a single document and can rank and live in the SERPS.

It is stored with a bunch of other files on the lostinhyperspace.com domain, which makes it a part of a website.

A single page in general will deal with one point or several points addressing what it is trying to impart to the viewer. In the case of a content site that will be information yet in the case of a shopping website that will usually be a breakdown of the product at hand as well as 1 or more images of that product with a link where the viewer can go and purchase that item from, either a shopping cart or another website handling the transactions such as eBay, PayPal or Amazon.

It is also very common to find similar products displayed below the initial product on a shopping website, in the hope that if the viewer did not really like the initial item one of the similar products may be what they are looking for.

In general a website will cover a theme or topic and uses individual pages to break down that information into useable chunks, which in turn link to each other throughout the website via the sites internal navigation or from within the body copy (the writing on the actual page).

It is also very common for links within a web page to link to other related resources on the internet other than that on the domain the page is on, if the webmaster feels that information will help their visitors. Another good example of this in action is from the Blogroll of many blogs.

I said in general as sites such as forums and social media sites can by their very nature fluctuate wildly due to the amount of contributing authors. A thread can go off topic pretty quickly.

A Search Engine

A search engine is basically used by people to easily find things on the internet. The Search Engine has crawled and cataloged web pages and files from across the planet and stored them in the form of lists, which is referred to as the index, so when you look for something it can offer you a selection from those files it has on file, quickly and effectively.

A search engine uses a search box as the means of access for the web surfer to query their index, after which the search engine will return it's list of most suitable results for the surfer to choose from. That list is referred to as the Search Engine Results Placements or SERPS for short.

Lets have a quick look at the SERPS
